Thinking about Self-Care

I've been thinking a lot about self-care over the past couple of weeks because I was invited to speak to a group of mental health care professionals who deal with eating disorders on this topic. They wanted to hear about what acupuncture can offer in this regard, which is a great deal.

I think self-care is something for all of us to think about because of the stressful pace that is the norm in our culture. Of course self-care will look a little different for each of us, but whether it is reading a good book, hiking, or doing yoga (to name but a few examples), it is essential that the activity moves our nervous system from sympathetic (stress) mode into parasympathetic (rest and restore) mode.

And that's what acupuncture excels at! Because acupuncture stimulates the production of oxytocin - a signaling molecule for the parasympathetic nervous system - it is a very direct way to soothe our nervous system. I always say that one of the "side effects" of acupuncture is RELAXATION and I would encourage all of you to make this a regular part of your self-care routine.
