How safe are your skin care products?

I recently listened to a podcast on potentially problematic ingredients in skin care and other beauty products, which I think is important to be aware of.

Here is the link to the Life Kit episode, and below is a list of the main ingredients of concern.

Ingredients of concern


Phthalates in Fragrance 

  • Be aware of the ingredient listed as 'fragrance'. It often contains phthalates used to make the scent in cosmetics more stable

  • Phthalates are hormone disrupters 

Formaldehyde

  • Used in hair straightening or smoothing products

  • A known carcinogen

 1,4 dioxane

  • A byproduct of the manufacturing process

  • A known carcinogen

  • Note it can be present in ingredients with the following prefix, word or syllables: PEG, polyethylene, polyethylene glycol, polyoxyethylene, F or oxenol

 Parabens

  • Synthetic antimicrobial chemicals that are used as preservatives

  • They are hormone disrupters
