How Acupuncture Reduces Pain & Inflammation
For all the science geeks out there: Here’s an exciting study that explains how and why acupuncture is helpful in reducing pain and inflammation. Published in the journal Molecular Neurobiology, this study revealed that needle stimulation caused an increase in anti-inflammatory cells (M2 macrophages) while down-regulating cells that increase inflammation (M1 macrophages).
M2 macrophages are an important source of interleukin-10, a protein with immune modulating properties. So when M2 macrophages are increased, more interleukin-10 becomes available and so pain and inflammation are reduced.
Since inflammation is a component of many chronic diseases and also comes into play with many sports related as well as repetitive-use injuries, this study certainly sheds light on why acupuncture can effectively treat such a wide array of complaints. If you know of family of friends who are struggling with their health, please remember that I offer free no-obligations health evaluations and a consultation to determine whether acupuncture may work for them.
